Setting up ros and Ubuntu 12.04 on the youbot

most important: the Ubuntu downloaded from youbot store has a german keyboard; so make sure you change it to english first when you install the OS from the Live CD you download

Install in this order (Things to Do After Installing Ubuntu 12.04)
  • Nvidia drivers
  • Gnome classic
  • Adobe Flash - Earlier this year Adobe announced that it was, in effect, abandoning support of the ubiquitous Flash Player plugin on Linux. Google will, instead, be taking over the reigns, integrating Flash for Linux into their Chrome browser. So if you want the latest stable and bug-free Flash player in Linux, Google Chrome is the only way to get it.
  • Install Media Codecs

Install Nvidia drivers from X-swat

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current

GDM was switched out for LightDM, so:
sudo service lightdm stop
sudo stop lightdm
For future reference, all these upstart services (that can be run with initctl's service command and shortcuts) are .conf files in /etc/init/

Advanced (if Nvidia drivers are required to be installed by hand):

Benchmark the graphics in Ubuntu

Install Gnome classic

sudo apt-get install gnome-session-fallback

Install KDE 3

Install Flash

Install chrome

Ubuntu format USB
